Quantitative genetic analysis of acid detergent fibre content in barley grain

چکیده
Acid detergent fibre (ADF) in cultivated barley (Hordeum vulgare vulgare L.) grain, a major indicator of digestibility, negatively affects feed quality, especially of non-ruminant livestock and poultry. Genetic studies of barley grain ADF content have been very limited. The objectives of this study were to map quantitative trait loci (QTLs) affecting ADF content to a molecular marker linkage map in barley, and to determine interactions among the QTLs identified. A population of 150 doubled haploid lines (DHLs) derived from a cross of ‘Steptoe’/‘Morex’ was used for mapping. A total of five QTLs were identified; three with relatively large effects mapping adjacent to one another on chromosome 2H and one each on chromosomes 4H and 1H (5). The five QTLs explained 64.5% of total variation. Steptoe contributed high ADF alleles at all QTLs identified. In order to confirm that the three adjacent QTLs on chromosome 2H are distinct genetic units, three DHLs representing each QTL were selected for backcrossing to Morex. Analysis of F2 ADF data from these three crosses showed that the three QTLs are distinct heritable genetic units. Additivity among the three major QTLs on chromosome 2H and the QTL on chromosome 1H (5) were observed. q 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Effects of Combinations of Wheat, Corn or Hulless Barley with Hulled Barley Supplemented with Soybean Meal or Canola Meal on Growth Rate, Efficiency of Feed Utilization and Carcass Quality of Market Pigs
Barley is the grain base for pig production in Western Canada. Its successful use depends upon appropriate supplementation. Good barley contains only 90% of recommended digestible energy (DE) for growingfinishing pigs. Barley is highly variable in DE, protein and amino acid content, being affected by varietal, agronomic and climatic factors. High fibre content is associated with reduced DE cont...

Oat (Avena sativa L.) traditionally has been a major crop for feed and forage in Turkey. Theobjective of this research was to study hay yield and quality of oat genotypes harvested at thelate milk stage. One hundred oat varieties of worldwide origin were compared in fieldexperiments in Samsun (northern Turkey) over two growing seasons (2007-2008 and 2008-2009).Significant differences between th...
متن کاملAn estimation of the combining ability of barley genotypes and heterosis for some quantitative traits
ABSTRACT- Barley (Hordeumvulgare L.) is one of the most important cereals in the world which is used as human and cattle feed and for malt production. One of the most important steps in a hybrid and selection breeding program of barley is the selection of suitable parents with high general (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) for grain yield. In order to estimate the combining ability and...
متن کاملComparative Mapping and Candidate Gene Analysis of SSIIa Associated with Grain Amylopectin Content in Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.)
Amylopectin concentration in barley endosperm has important effects on grain quality and end-use. In this study, quantitative trait locus (QTL) analysis together with genome-wide association studies (GWAS) were performed to identify markers linked to grain amylopectin content respectively using a doubled haploid (DH) population of 178 lines and a collection of 185 diverse barley germplasms both...
متن کاملEffects of variety and steeping conditions on some barley components associated with colonic health
BACKGROUND Butyric acid is produced by degradation of dietary fibre by microbiota and is crucial for maintaining a healthy colon. The physicochemical properties are important for butyric acid formation, and this study aimed to evaluate the use of malting to tailor the functional characteristics of barley dietary fibre. The effect of different steeping conditions was evaluated in laboratory-scal...
